Simulating keyboard input in directx

I have a working windows hook. The problem is that I want to create and simulate keyboard input and have it appear in a directx game (generating the chars to the game from the keyboard hook). Essentially similar to what the sidewinder software does. If you program a button to type out text using the sw software it will do it both in windows and in a directx game. I have tried sendinput. It works in regular windows but does not work well within the game. Also, in win98 sendinput is not supported and keyb_event does not make characters appear within the game. Any help appreciated
