A BSP tree with precompiled PVS is the most used spatial organisation technique (used in any game based on the Quake/HalfLife and Unreal engine).

Portals are also used. Blade The Severerance Of Darkness uses portals, and it looks so damn good...

What the hells!

PVS == Potentially Visible Set

The set of nodes that are potentially visible from a particular node (each node has its own PVS).

Blade´s shadows are done with shadow volumes. That´s not much help though. Search google in order to have more info.
