open-source lightmap tool
hi,
i just want to ask you all, what do you think of on open source lightmap generator? i think that the most 3d engines uses lightmaps. but every coder has to write his own lightmap tool. so why is there no proc that can do this for everybody?
Because of this i try to start an open source project. Some more infos on my page www.rafflesia.cxa.de.
Let´s hear what you think
bye
I think everybody should write his own lighmap generator. And people who are only interested in making a renderer, won''t make a level editing tool themselves, and so probably will not need a lightmap generator, becuase worldcraft, or Q3Radaint will do that for them.
So I guess what I''m saying is: no, don''t bother, because either you go all the way and make your tools yourself(all of them), or you make no tools whatsoever, and use a complete package to generate your data

thanks to your reply, but i don´t think so. ´cause if you´re right, why do the most people use programs to create models, textures and so on.
what i want to say is that you can use the time to add better effects or more speed to your engine. lightmaps are like models, just a product that the most designer need. and if you can use a tool that is already finished, you don´t have to do your own. and if many people help to create such a tool, it will (maybe) get better than what you have done alone.
q3radient etc. are limited to special file formats (as far as i know) and i thought of on open structure, so that a lot of common file formats can be used with the proc.
just an idea...

The problem I think is following: Everybody has diffrent .map formats... I think a library (.dll?) would be better... were, like in openGL just enter all the geometry data and get back the lightmaps.... just some ideas..
I''d love to see the source :O)))

hi,
yes this could be a way. i thought about dll´s for your format, because a lot of people use standart formats for ther creating of the models and then u could generate your lightmap and THEN u convert your models into yout own format.
but if you write the dll for your specific format, it´s ok, too. i would like to publish the internal data structure for the proc. the only problem is that not many people show there interests, so that i´m not sure to start the project...

The quake and the halflife tool sources both contain qRad, a lightmap generation tool.
