Real time shadows

You can use the stencil buffer for shadows in PR3, Chris has included sample code as to how to do this.

I read an article in Gamautra about how to develop real time shadows "Nocturne" style using the stencil buffer. Is it possible to use the stencil buffer in PR 2.6 or 3? how?

Where can I find more info about stencil buffers?

I haven't seen Nocturne but I assumed they were projected onto lightmaps, not using stencil buffering.
