Texture Size
I have a question about large textures.
I know some cards cannot support large textures above something like 256 or 128, I don''t remember. How many cards are there that don''t support these larger textures?
Gary
All cards support texture sizes up to 512x512. When you use a larger texture and the card does not support it, it is resized on load to the largest supported resolution.
On tests that I have done, when using texture sizes 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 causes significant slowdown even on Radeon and geForce3 cards. Its just a LOT more work that needs to be done for not much of an improvement in image quality.
If you need to use large textures on an object, split it up into a bunch of smaller textures. My game has some large PRO objects that have 2048x2048 textures, but my program splits up the texture when the PRO is loaded (a little bit of my own programming, it does it in a similar way that landscape engine does, and you can always do it manually if needed).

Um, the Voodoo 1, 2, and 3 only support 256x256 textures maximum. I can''t quote specs on the earlier Rage and TNT cards.
All the older Voodoo cards had 256x256 maximum.
This includes Voodoo1, Voodoo2, Voodoo3, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo Banshee.
PsycoBlade, have you tried using compressed DDS textures for 1024x1024 and larger?

I guess when I said ''all cards'', I was really thinking ''all cards that are worth playing games on that would even have high resolution textures in the first place''
I never tried compressed DDS... but I''m going to cut down on textures sizes anyway.. I''m reaching the 16 meg mark and I''m not even half way done with texturing.
