A Starfield would be nice, you could then also have some nebulae clusters, planets etc drawn as sprites, moving independantly of each other in parallax

Im pretty sure that what you are saying is possible at some level, but im also pretty sure that it is quite expensive in processing time or at least not very realistic.
Why dont you try a cubic or spheric background instead? Check the power render ship example for this.
Or in your case why not a real Star field?
Check the asteroids example too.
