I'm currently working on a paper about using shadow techniques on the iPhone, and I'm searching for the history of shadow maps. I know that williams introduced the technique, but does anyone know when the technique was starting to be used in games? Which were the first games to use shadow maps? Appreciate all answers

AFAIK, Hardware-accelerated shadow mapping came of age in 2001 on GeForce3 (DX8) cards.

thanks a bunch!
depends on what kind of shadowmap you're talking about, there have been some pretty old games applying some kind of shadowmap. some were just projecting the characters black/white rendering on the ground, some were projecting some pre-rendered car-shadow-map on the racetrack (i think nfs did this), some were using the alpha channel during projection to reject pixels based on the depthbuffer (I think ATI called this priority buffers).
I am interested in real-time calculated shadow maps.
