Atom performance for compile/build tasks?
Anyone out there tried doing build work on an Atom system? I'm considering building a super cheap continuous integration box, but I can't figure out how the Atom might compare to regular desktop chips on this front. I don't need blazing fast compiles but I'd prefer not to wait all day for results, either...
What are you going to be compiling? C#? C++? Java?
I tried building a low power Atom box and found it to be too slow. I wasn't using it for continuous integration, but it was rather slow at compiling Java. I swapped out the Atom board for a low power setup using an Athlon X2 5050e (45 W TDP) along with a Zotac mini-itx board. I've had no performance issues whatsoever.

About 200 KLOC of C++/CLI, is the big one. I didn't realize you could get mini-itx boards for anything but VIA chips. What's the cost like?
The prices are bound to be different than when I bought the components last June, but I spent a little under $420 for a complete mini-itx system.

Hm. I'm trying to slide in under $200, so just about half of that. Might be time to hit up the used market.
Don't care about power, do care about noise. The two are of course related somewhat. I've just remembered that I have an Athlon64 X2 and 2GB of RAM lying around...all I need is a new motherboard. I think I'll build that out, since it sounds like it will be a lot better than the Atom dual cores chips...assuming I can still find a socket 939 board.
