They use additive blending. White plus anything else gets clamped to white.
If you find a way to show a color brighter than white, let me know
Particles and white background
Hi
I do understand that T_LIGHTMAP_ADD add to the currect color and the maximum is pure white.
But for example an explosion do two things
create light & partly block the light.
By this if the explosion's color is Red, the final result will be some sort of red too.

There is no subtract but you could try multiplying the source and destination (LIGHTMAP_MULT)
