Estimating time and effort on game projects

Hello to everyone! I'm an university proffessor working on software engineering area. I'm looking for a methodology or guidelines related to estimation of gaming or simulation software projects. I know about function points and use case points, but I think they are not suitable for a game development project. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!!!
