Unity Game engine separating renderer and material?

For example, for both Unity and Ogre3D, renderer(Renderable) and material is, in fact, same. (linked tightly) Is there any engine in which renderer and material are separated? (linked loosely) I want few renderers to be linked to one material and vise versa. So that, in rendering time, renderer and material are used flexibly (and complexly) in many situation. Thank you.
