OpenGL creating a 3d sphere carousel view by embedding images

Hi, I want to create a 3d carousel view on a sphere in openGL. But i am able to embed only one texture on sphere created using " glutSolidSphere ". I also want to add zoom in and out capability ,plus camera controls. It is supposed to be a kind of image viewer where images are embedded on sphere. What are the features of opengl which I should use? Also something to make it more visually impressive.
