Well, I am kind of trying to compile a list of features that people would like to see in an MMORPG. They can be features that already exists in current MMORPGs that you like a lot, or maybe features you wish that existing MMORPGs had in them. I will be replying to my own post with some of my own ideas when i''m not alt-tabbing between GameDev.net and work

* Being able to rent/buy your own house/apartment like in UO.
* Being able to choose different carriers than just warriors and magicians - say like merchants, blacksmiths or bards. Like in UO

"This album was written, recorded and edited at Gröndal, Stockholm in the year of 2000. At this point in time money still ruled the world. Capitalistic thoughts were wide spread. From the sky filled with the fumes of a billionarie''s cigar to the deepest abyss drenched in nuclear waste. A rich kid was a happy kid, oh..dirty, filthy times. Let this be a reminder."
- Fireside, taken from back of the Elite album
* Being able to rent/buy your own prostitute, not like in UO
* Being able to choose different jobs, male escort, stripper, and hitman, not like in UO
Sounds like you like UO
I have never actually played it, but I really like everything I have heard about it. It seems like the most flexible MMORPG around...maybe i should play it a bit and try to pick up a few ideas.
Some ideas I thought would be cool are:
-being able to disguise yourself, so say if you killed a guard of a castle you could wear his armor and gain access to the castle and stuff like that
-maybe by exploring the world you can discover new cities/civilizations, which would unlock the ability for you to create a character of that civilization
My "wish list" for an MMORPG:

* Being able to produce the game with a budget of less than $10M.
* Being able to create the game with fewer than 50 people (mostly artists).
* Being able to complete the game in less than 2-5 years.
* Being able to release the game to a market that''s not glutted by UO- and EQ-lookalikes.

howabout:

a game that''s not a graphical UI for Circle MUD (like EQ)
a game that''s actually fun to play (unlike UO and EQ)
a game that''s original (unlike most anything since the early 90''s)
wow, the real feedback pours in. what kind of stuff could make an MMORPG more original? A more complex skill system maybe? Or just more flexibility to do what you want so that the game isn''t really bounded? Or maybe a new setting (time/place/etc)?? i''m interested...
-completely customizable avatar appearance
-a house to decorate
-a shop to sell in-game stuff in if you want to be an artisan
-being able to turn off monster encounters in your preferances/options file and not have this hurt your levelling or income
-being able to choose to be immune from pk-ing
-dungeons with puzzles in them
-being able to invent or build things in-game
-private chatrooms that allow cybersex

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

I think having your own "personal space" would be really cool. You could put trophies from your adventuring here (for example, the head of a really tough monster you dispatched, your Magic Wand of Easter Eggs +4, whatever...) as well as some of your own artwork if you like (you might have pictures of yourself/your family/movie stars on your walls or whatever).

It doesn''t neccesarily have to be a "house", with a normal front door and everything, I mean if there''s 20,000 people in your game then that''s probably a lot of front doors but as long as there''s a way for me to invite my friends there - maybe even hold meetings there or whatever, I''ll be really happy.
