Astrosmash Remake
Hey fellows,
first I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Justin Bohemier and I am new to this forum. I'm a computer programmer, musician and I love old video games. I wanted to get into the video game industry but I'm not attracted to modern games. They lack character in my opinion. But maybe it's because those were the ones around when I had my childhood imagination and of course those will stick to you most.
Anyways, I thought I can start by showcasing my newest creation. It's a remake of the classic intellivision game astrosmash. I kept the same feel, but added some new elements and made it more arcade-like.
There's a leaderboard at the site, so if you beat a highscore, follow the instructions to submit your score. Here's the link:

Hope you enjoy it!
I personally think games today are much better in nearly every aspect than old games, but it's common that people don't like them as much as the oldies. I don't know why and think it's a flaw in most human minds, they stop trying to learn and try new things after a certain age. Most people my age don't know anything about modern gaming and when I try to talk about it, they simply think about old nostalgic games and want to re-play them. I mean, great for memories, but why don't you simply stop living in the past and start playing real entertainment?!
I don't think there's such a thing as real and unreal entertainment. If you feel entertained, then all to ya. I think we've lost a lot by needing fancier and fancier forms of entertainment. It has turned us impatient I believe. So you're saying we should stop listening and observing old and classic forms of music and art because it's outdated? And those who are focused on old styles are confused? There's beauty to be seen everywhere. I for one see things in old vids than others don't I guess. But I'm not resisting anything.
I agree with Ophelius. Games don't stop being fun just because they've aged a few years and Astrosmash was fun. Do movies become bad once they've been out for a certain number of years years? Or cars? Or books? Honestly, to say that it's a flaw in human minds to not enjoy something current as much as something older seems a bit pretentious... but that's just my 2 cents.
On to the OP... A cool remake of and old (and still good) game. The squadron is definately a handy addition.
I think the only changes I would make would be to start the game a tad slower at low levels (the original didn't get so frantic until a few levels in as I recall)
Also, having an auto-fire button would be nice. I think I almost wore out my poor 'Z' key by hitting it so much ;)
All in all it's a worthy addition to my casual games collection. Good job!

PX: Thanks for the review.
I put a lot of thought into the speed of the game and decided that the orginal started off too slow. A lot of the top classics were designed where most people trying it for the first time couldn't get past the first 2 stages unless they practiced a bit. I believe I found a good speed where it's not too difficult but not too slow to start. I'm not trying to replicate the game entirely, but I want to keep the same look and experience while adding some of my own ideas. It's like instead of having the original levels 1-6, I have levels 3-8.
The auto-fire was removed because I'm building an arcade to house this game and an arcade game usually doesn't have an auto-fire option, but I might add it in the upcoming update strickly for the pc version. I'm not worried about breaking the z key anyways. Who needs the z key? lol
Anyways, thanks for the feedback. And if you ever beat the online scores, make sure to send me the highscore.dat file so I can verify and include you on the leaderboard.
Thanks

Bug alert: If anyone is still playing version 0.9.3 which they downloaded before this post on March 3, 2010, please re-download. The bug is that the UFO never appears again if it shoots you. To get him back you have to reset the game. This bug is now fixed in the current version. I didn't want to wait until the next release.
Version 0.9.4 is out.
It now has Joystick support and a new configuration application to tweak your game settings the way you want.

Arcade version released!
-New retro arcade-style title with rotating demo screens. Feels like the real thing.
-This version is ready to be put into a custom PC-based arcade cabinet. Just re-route the keyboard keys to the joystick, pushbuttons, coin slot etc using a JAMMA board or similar. If you already have a MAME arcade cabinet, let me know so I can send you a custom game with the Keys you specify(because your 'Fire' pushbutton might not be linked to the game's 'Z' button, etc). I guess I'll come out with a config tool to map out the keys how you want.
Let me know if you actually use this game in your arcades
