Pre-rendered large backgrounds and camera

Hello, I am developing a pre-rendedered background system for an adventure game, such as the one used in Vampyre Story. One thing I do not understand how to implement is how to handle the scrolling of the scene, if the background image is larger than the screen resolution. Considering that we have a perspective camera to render the 3d objects (and the walk mesh in the zbuffer), how would I create a scrollable background image which from whatever spot you look at it, it will look like rendered from a perspective camera which points always to the front? Other games that use this technique are the Final Fantasy series for PS1 and the first Resident Evils.
