max passes per shader

Hi folks, done a quick google to find if there is a maximum allowable number of passes that a shader can utilize. Nothing much turned up so here I am. I imagine there would be varying numbers especially between vendors. Would anyone be willing to put an average number to it? - or even better know specifics? Thanks for your thoughts.

The number of passes is most likely unlimited. Each pass is in general a draw call as if you were rendering an object over itself multiple times.

Does it answer your question? Why do you have to know the maximum number of passes?
