Drawing Vectors for debugging

I would like to draw my objects' orientation, normals, and light volumes as lines. should i use gl lines for this? i need to make them unaffected by my lighting equations.

Yes, glLines is probably what you want.

OpenGL is a state machine, either disable your shader, disable lighting, or set the ambient light to pure white.
It is also useful to draw some lines with depth test disabled so you can see ones that would otherwise be inside a model.
