Direct X 9.0 - Hooked device rendering issue

My project injects a dll into a running process and hooks the dx9 device so I can render images, text, and other primitives and such. This works fine when I inject the dll into a test project I made that simply sets up a device and doesn't render anything, however when the dll is injected into an application that actually does some rendering, the primitives are rendered with a weird whitish tint. I think I may not be setting a render state correctly or something before drawing the primitives, but I really don't know so I was wondering if one of you might.
