Changing rendertargets question

When I render some stuff (1280x800 currently), then attach two rendertargets (256x128), then switch back to the first rendertarget, there's a rectangular region in the upper left corner (256x128) that isn't overwritten with the new information. I know this has to have a simple explanation. I switch render targets a few times, usually is the same size, but another time I switch it to 512x512, and there doesn't seem to be a problem. What am I forgetting here?

Maybe need to clear depth and/or target? I had a similar problem when switching render targets, except my RT's were all the same size so I got a fullscreen of black.
