OpenGL OpenGL 3.2+ Alpha textures?

Since GL_ALPHA has been depricated for OpenGL 3.2, what's the customary format to set for a texture I'm using for bitmap fonts (only alpha) in glTexImage2D? Is it all just semantics since my shader will be deciding what to do with the information? GL_RED seems like the obvious call for me... Just seems "dirty" -me
