Cockpit mode

Recommended Posts

So I'm playing one of my favorite mech games of all time: Gundam - Side Story (Dreamcast). And it hit me. Wouldn't it be cool if I could mimic the cockpit? By this, I mean have a set up with 3 monitors. One directly in front of you, and the other two on either side of you but diagonal (think the of the sides of a equilateral hexagon). For good effect, have the monitors be >=21". I think this would make (at least for this type of game) a more immersive effect. And for the wow effect, add some 3D effects (ie. pop out of the screen). Do you think (assuming it was affordable and feasible) this type of set up would be worth the effort for this type of game to support?

Don't know.
Decent 2 supported multiple monitors (up to 3!) AND stereoscopic 3d on one monitor.

Why one? Sticking with my example, if I'm simulate a cockpit which has 3 windows (1 front, 2 side), then wouldn't I want all 3 in stereoscopic 3D?

(For clarity, stereoscopic 3D is what all the movies now are doing. And the other 3D is parallax-something-or-another, which is what the Nintendo 3Ds is using. Right?)

It sounds like a cool setup. It would definitely be a high end, hard core offering (which would be nice in this age where "accessibility" seems to be the driving design force in big studios). Years ago I occasionally played a bit of the Battletech games that were offered in immersion pods and had a blast, so if I had the cash I'd spring for the gear.

One thing I'd do if I were designing this sort of game would be to make it highly competitive and give a gameplay edge to the folks who invested in the additional monitors. If the gameplay were hardcore enough, for instance, you might dedicate 1/4 of each peripheral view to status displays. A player who didn't have this setup would still be able to pan around the cockpit in virtual fashion, but having the monitors would not only be more scenic, it would offer more practical information.

That's awesome. Though I don't know what I would use 6 monitors for! I try however [smile]

I like the idea of having 3 screens, but 6 seems like its not much of an advantage (for gaming anyways). Here is another video testing the 3x2 setup with several games. Having the screen split in the middle horizontally pretty much screws up the picture for any type of FPS game (crosshairs are split across the screens).

If I had some extra cash laying around I would opt for a 3 monitor set up...
