I''m wondering how lightmaps are generated for games. Also, how are they stored? Just like any other texture? I read a post about writing a universal open-source seemingly magical lightmap generator. How difficult is it? Thanks for your input. -- C Deity

theers a few methods, most revolve around tracing a line from the surface to the light to see if it hits anything if so then no diffuse light from that light source hits that surface, u can also use radosity which works on sort of the same theory but in this case the lines can ''bounce'' off other surfaces before they get to the light.
as u can imagine this is a slow. my program takes about an hour to generate the lms for a level.

lightmaps are just like like most other textures, with the exception u normally pack multiple lightmaps into one texture.
