hi I am making a terrain engine at the moment and i was wondering what is the best way to load the terrain. Since the land has to be huge it obviously isnt loaded all at once, So would i make some sort of grid system where the user if the user is in it would load the surrounding grid? Any ideas? Thanks

That's basicallly it in a nutshell.

You can them stream the surrouning 8 layers into memory on a separate thread (slowly if needed) so when you start moving it's all ready to rock and there's no loading delays at all.

Maybe this idea I had can be usefull.

Prioritize loading terrain blocks in the average direction of travel first and then load the others.

With average it should be a running mean going back in time a couple of frames..

This way if someone is running fast and constantly in one direction blocks ahead will be prioritized..other blocks on the sides (outside of horizon) might not even need to be loaded since person has by then moved far away..
