Multiple objects X format.

Hi all, when i download free model in 3ds format for car or character for example, I see everytime object subdivided in multiple objects suppose a character into body,pant,shoes and so. Every object has it own texture. I'm writing my own engine and I use X format for importing mesh. But i'm able to import only one mesh (object) for every X file especially for skinned mesh. My question is: Why ALL 3ds max object i found are composed by multiple objects even for lowpoly? Is supposed for a programmer to connects every objects together in 3ds max and then unwrapping and texturing all for get single object with single texture to load or there is a way to load multiple meshes from single file ?
