Managing User Accounts

Recommended Posts

For those of you who run games/sites with user accounts: How do you go about managing them? And what concerns must be taken into consideration when first developing your system? (as well as once it's launched?) I'm creating a game: * Users can use a guest account for trial purposes (Haven't decided yet if these will be persistent or not... probably not... then I don't need to keep track of anything on my end [trial has limited functionality, but not time]) * Full users will have paid accounts (monthly subscription) Any recommended libraries/frameworks for this? Also, any recommended resources (books, articles, etc.)? I currently run a site with logins, but it's a small site and all the users are people I know in person. For that I just used phpBB's login system (even though I don't actually use a forum on the site). My main concerns so far are: * Piracy... how do you prevent and deal with stolen accounts? * Customer management... I'd like to make things as automated as possible with signing up, changing passwords, etc. Also, I'm planning on using Paypal to handle the subscription payments, anyone here agree with my choice? Or recommend otherwise? Thanks!

This only applies if the billing/payment interface is browser-based:

Social Gold (http://www.jambool.com/) is a very easy to use and low-cost (relative to others in that space) option that supports many languages/currencies and payment options. A pure paypal solution will be about 40% of the commission fee of social gold, but social gold's benefits in terms of multi-language support and coverage for more payment types might be worth that extra fee.

Playspan (http://corp.playspan.com/) is another option that offers an amazing number of payment options. Especially if you will have a younger audience, their higher commission structure will be offset by the ease of purchase that their gamer cards give to younger players.
