Can someone point me towards a simple example of using DirectWrite with Direct3D 11 in SlimDX? Both the DirectX and SlimDX Feb 2010 are lacking DirectWrite samples, and all of the online tutorials are concerned with using DirectWrite and Direct2D. Thanks.

As of right now there's no way for Direct2D/DirectWrite to directly interoperate with Direct3D11. The only way you can do it is to use a 10.1 device for DirectWrite/Direct2D, and use DXGI synchronization to share the surfaces with your D3D11 device.

Okay, thanks.

Is that a limitation of SlimDX, or of Direct3D 11?

D3D11 limitation, mainly.

I can see how drawing 2D text onto the screen 'shouldn't be' the job of Direct3D, but it's something many people need to do. I'm surprised they haven't made it simpler (or, in the case of Direct3D 11, possible at all).

Hopefully the next SDK will include this.

For the time being the only way to do this is vai the approach MJP mentioned. There are several lengthy discussion on this topic that you can look into if you want to do it.
