[fmod] Using audio to direct visual effects

I've just integrated audio to simply stream in a music file in my game and the fact that It took 12 lines of code pleases me greatly. However, I'd like to know where I can learn about facilities to use the music data to do things like change the colors of certain objects on every bass beat, cause some particle emitter to fire, etc etc. I'm looking for something to create a visual environment similar to Beat Hazard in the way it responds to your music. Can fmod offer me this? I should note I know zero about DSP, if that's what's involved.
