Directx 8 Side Scrolling

Anyone know how to do side scrolling in dx 8? I have written a simple 2d shooter that is only one screen. I want to make a mario type scrolling game. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? I guess in theory you would have a bunch of images and after copying them to the back buffer, adjust the x position of each image when the character moves a certain distance, ? Thanks
