super smash bros: to the companies get cuts?

So I've been curious about this for a long time. When Nintendo makes super smash brothers, would it be correct to assume that Konami etc gets no cuts in the sales from the inclusion of snake etc, and they're just in for extra publicity? I was arguing about this with a friend who insists otherwise.. there's no way to know is there?

Yeah they would have had to have worked out a deal with the owners of those characters. There's no way of knowing what the deal was though.

It's possible even that they paid Nintendo to put their characters into the game (like a form of advertising)... who knows...

1. Never assume anything.
2. Absolutely not. In business, there's always money involved for everything.
3. It might be a percentage of sales, or it might be a flat amount.

Let's imagine for a moment. If there was no money involved but rather a quid pro quo, then Konami would get permission to use Mario in some Konami game. And it's unlikely Nintendo would prefer that to spending a little money. Any IP owner always wants approval control over the use of their IP.
