Multi-Material Selection

Hi All! Ok so my problem is that I want to add Normal Maps and other special effects to a character, just the thing is the character uses a Multi-Material setup consisting of more then one diffuse texture. I know the XNA skinned model framework has a material overwrite function that removes all other maps besides the diffuse map and will simply crash if you try to export a shader skinned model object. so I want to know is there a way of selectively rendering multi-mat objects and apply the normal maps by hard code, or will it simply be easier to change the material overwrite to not completely remove all but diffuse
