For terrain rendering, I'm a big fan of Terragen. Much more realistic than bryce, and tends to render much faster as well. Best of all, since it's in beta, it's free. Check it out and d/l a copy at http://www.planetside.co.uk.

If you're wanting to model mecha, spaceships, and other such critters, check out DoGA CGA. It has X format export and it's a freebie. [http://www.doga.co.jp]

In defense of POV Ray, it is a ray tracer. Use a program like Moray if you want to model for POV Ray. Doom is a ray caster, completely different technology.

I have tried almost every product listed above and I consider Lightwave to be the best one for its money. It is very easy to learn and recently 6.0 has UV mapping. With Messiah it makes animation very similar to SoftImage. Lightwave was not my first program so I am not as biased as the others.
There are many 3D paint programs that you can use with this produce.

Amorphium, is basically a lower verison of Electric Image. It is produce by PLAY. I have never used it. I not sure if I would even bother.

I hope it helps,

Tim

well, I like both 3dsmax and lw, i heard both MAYA, and softimage are GREAT, but they are way out of my proce range, so i will be forgetting them for now.

and as for the coment about POVRAY and ray tracing and ray casting being completely different technologies, that is not, true, ray casting is closely related to ray tracing, however it is much faster at the sake of quality. While raytracing works by casting rays from the light sources and finding how it bounces in the seen and then returning the value as a color for the image, ray casting is basically backwards ray tracing ( shooting a ray from the screen, to the nearest intersecting poly and computing the color value) with a bounce limil of 0. Ray casting is much simplier and gives much lower quality results than ray tracing (obviously, doom(or more fairly GLDoom) to production quality CG)but it is also much faster (many fps (anywhere from 10 to 100 or greater)while Ray tracing is much slower (could take minutes or hours for 1 frame based on scene complexity ( can reach 3 to 4 fps on super computers, but realistically who has those). anyway

My 2cents,

I have been a professional animator/modeler for 8 years and have used everything from VideoScape3D(Amiga) to SoftImage Extreme 3.5 (NT).

I recommend 3D-Studio MAX 3.1 hands down. There is nothing better for the price....period.

Anybody know what software is best for making 3D models that port to directX? Anybody try Amorphium? It's new; I was wondering if its any good. Is there any good shareware or freeware modelers out there.. or what's the best (and affordable) commercial one to get?

Thanks,
-Dan

I'd have to disagree about MAX being the hands down winner. WHile version 3 has a much "prettier" interface and is extrememly customizable, it still has a CAD-like feel which many artists may have a hard time grasping. I'm not putting the program down, I've seen some amazing things down with it, but at the same time I've seen amazing things done with POV-Ray. It's all based upon the users preference, and mine happens to be trueSpace, which seems to be slowly gaining more respect as a modeler and animation program, though it still lacks some features which would aid in animation, but all of which will be resolved with tS5, which should be on the market in a few months. I'm a bit more in the know when it comes to trueSpace, and I can say with some authority that it will be turning some very big heads in the coming months as a viable alternative to the much more expensive MAX.

Blender is a freeware modeller, though I don''t think it export to the X format. I personally found it very difficult to use, but I know some people that swear by it, so you might as well try. Very small download (around 4mb), has lots of high-end features. I personally use Carrara, by metacreations, which is sort of a follow up of Ray Dream. Not very good for character creation, since it doesn''t support bones. Other than that, the program is relatively cheap, and Carrara''s new renderer is among the best in terms of speed and quality. It is also, IMHO, extremely easy to learn. It also has an SDK that is very easy to use, so you could write an exporter to another format. You might be able to pick up Ray Dream for cheap now at surplus auction, and there is an x file exporter plug-in available for free.

I would agree with all theese above and would like to add the modeller RHINO 3D (i think i got i right)...

I supports NURBS....
