hi, i have been working on a character based application called zzt++ for about three years and have decided to rewrite it to a win32 console applications. two things stand in my way: 1. direct video ram access 2. interrupt service routines i realise that i should use the win32 API to achieve my goal. i need a good reference to the necessary functions. is msdn.microsoft.com the best i can do? should i install Visual C++ Studio 6.0 (including documentation)? is there a book i should read? any information would be much appreciated. wep http://www.planetzztpp.com WeP http://www.planetzztpp.com

thanks for that! i''m not familiar with windows development or with how to use msdn.

do i get the same information on VS6 as i do on msdn.microsoft.com? or do you recommend buying a good book on the win32 API? i will need to know about using the timer interrupt and hooking an interrupt service routine to it as well. any pointers as to how to go about doing that in windows?

thanks again for your help.

MSDN is updated about every few months or so (depends if a new windows comes out, for example there was a new MSDN when XP Beta 1 came out and new one when Beta 2 came out.)

msdn.microsoft.com is always the "latest" version, but you can also have MS ship it out to you on a DVD or a couple of CDs. Getting it shipped is quite cheap, usually only the cost of shipping, and I find having the DVD is much faster than searching on the net.

You might want a book if you''re learning windows stuff, but once you''ve got the basics, I don''t think you really need it - msdn is more than enough.
