Where do I go now? Engines etc.

At the moment I have photoshop and Maya which I can use to make models and textures which is fine but I don't know where to go in terms of a Game Engine, there are so many options.

If it helps I'm wanting something both 2d and 3d capable. I'm not looking to create graphic intense games, just somewhere to begin learning the logic behind making a game.

What else should I be aware of, programs etc? I also don't really have any idea when it comes to code, C++ or OpenGL, is code only used to make game engines?

Allegro has 2D and I believe the new version also supports 3D but not sure of that.. (http://www.allegro.cc/)
OpenGL can be used for 2D and 3D.. (http://www.opengl.org/)

Sounds like you don't want to go into hardcore coding.
Use Unity 3D. http://unity3d.com/ It has support for several scripting languages.
