Difference between Mesh simplification and LOD

Mesh simplification will minimize triangles where it doesn't need to have them (like a flat area can be combined form a grid into one big square) while LOD usually renders a different level of detail of the mesh, usually takes the previous (more detail) level and skips every other vertex.

I'd recommend Chunked LoD as an algorithm to use.

But ultimately, both LOD and Mesh simplification reduces the no of trianlges to be rendered and thereby improves performance. Shall we say LOD (at less detail level) implements mesh simplification algorithm?



But How about the preserving the topology in both cases. For me, I can't afford to loose shape even for lesser detail.

Level of detail is a general concept of... changing the level of detail in something.

Mesh simplification is a specific group of techniques that can be used to achieve LOD.



i.e. your question is similar to "What is the difference between an apple and fruit?"
