Can I use Z Buffer for sprites?

I want to draw text, I know I can do it as a billboard, but for now I am simply using D3DXProjectVector3 to get where to draw the 2D text according to the world position of an entity. Problem is, no occluding or z-testing.

Is there a way to enable Z-test for the 2D text or 2D sprites against already rendered 3D objects? Or only billboard?
