Could Someone help me understand the concept of Sprite Batching?

Im starting to create my own game (SlimDX/C#) and I'm having trouble on the concept of what Sprite Batching is. My understanding is that you are trying to make drawing faster by grouping together draw calls which are drawing the same texture. is this true? If you guys have links to any information (I have already been searching around about this and can't find much) I would be glad to see them.

Well, it obviously is true. By sending the texture over the data bus per group of sprites (instead of per sprite) you'll definitely get a better performance. I do not know how much performance you save exactly. It's rather strange that you can't find info about it: I googled sprite batching and got tons of info, including this.
