Hello,

Does anybody know whether I can use a frame buffer object without associating it to a window in the X Windows system?

I want to do off-screen rendering completely independent of any on-screen window.

Thanks.

Drawing to a frame buffer object does not need a window as such. You can just attach a texture.

However, for any kind of OpenGL operation, you need a valid context. So you will still need an X display handle and visual info to create a context (see the man page for the glXCreateContext function).
