hi, i have a few game programming books, but they dont seen to even touch the aspect of a health bar, or menu or a means to show coins, xp.
been trying to find code examples.
is there a book i could buy, or does gamedev have some examples of implementing somewhere to show a score, or exit or start button. i have heaps of examples of loading meshes, displaying them, using direct input. but nothing in regards to displays of most rpg's or fps gui's.

Usually the kind of UI stuff you're talking about isn't anything special; frequently, it's just textured quads. As such, there's really no magic to implementing a UI system.

If you don't want to implement it yourself, one option would be to use an existing GUI library. I haven't used any such libraries myself though, so I can't make an specific recommendations.

If that doesn't answer your question, perhaps you could pick one of the things you mentioned (like making a health bar), and try to implement it. Then, if you run into problems, post back here and someone should be able to help.
