GamePad Button Confirmation

without going into too much detail I've got these slick working menus,...
pressing the A button confirms a menu selected

But here is the problem, I have multiple menus and since my update checks if the A button has been released it tends to jump through the menus - rather than stopping at each one for confirmation

so mainmenu

so for instance, I press A to select submenu3. Submenu3 gets drawn and everything is fine. Press B and I back out to mainmenu.

However if I decided to select submenu1 - it would carry me all the way to childsubmenu1 without stopping - I have to press B to back out and select my childmenus

I have been working integrating all kinds of booleans or counting down of integers but nothing works since the ButtonRelease update will always set the next boolean or int so that it can trigger the next condition with triggers the next condition..

I don't know a strategy that will solve this.
