turning a model in the correct direction

im on a computer games course, and we are doing AI .

what kind of maths is used to determin which way an ai model needs to turn to face the player , clockwise or anti clock wise..

do you use the dot product of the ai facing vector and the plays relitive vector position .. and how or could you point me towards some web help

I would use atan2 to get the angle between them and compare it to the characters current angle.

However, I really suck at math so there may be faster ways to do it with these dot and cross product thingamajigs :D
