I'm not super experienced with configuring Apache yet, and am looking for some help.
I just got a new VPS server, and I'm in the process of migrating my site to it.
There's the main site: www.mainsite.com
But also several subdomains: subversion.mainsite.com, etc...
I think I can set these up using Apache Virtual Hosts, but I'm a little unsure how to do that since I can only access my new server through its IP (as in, just the numbers, such as 209.85.225.147). My domain name "mainsite.com" still points to my old shared-hosting server, and I don't want to transfer it until the new one is ready. Can I get the new one ready (which will require actually accessing it remotely from a browser) with just the IP? All documentation and tutorials I've found have assumed a domain name, not simply the IP, but I don't want to purchase a temporary one for such a short time (and don't want to point the current one away from the functional site at the moment).
[web] Apache subdomains with only IP
The easiest thing to do would be to just grab a free subdomain from dyndns.org or somewhere, solely for development.
An easy solution is to alter you local hosts (works on windows/linux) file with whatever subdomains/domains you need pointing to the correct IP of the new server. This will let HTTP virtual hosts work correctly on the new server, and not affect your live server until you are ready to change DNS.
