how to project Z-values to World Coordinates

What exactly are you trying to do this for?

I think there may be some different points in vertical direction at each horizontal position in a multilayered and uneven terrain.Now what I do is getting the z-values and translating them to world space.

I have used the D3DXVec3Unproject(),but the result is not right(I think).Is there anything to pay attention to specially?
