Resting contact and oscillation

Say I've got a box on a flat surface affected by gravity. I calculate the normal force and apply it to the supporting vertex (i.e. box corner). The box sits on the surface but oscillates from side to side. I believe this is a common problem (caused by the fact of discrete time steps)? How should it be handled? Altenatively, any links to online material covering this problem would cool.

Any help much appreciated,
