3D Game engine??

What does a 3d game engine do? Actually i know what it does. Afterall i am a gamer. when you program one in OpenGL what do you program it to do?

You program it to draw quads/polygons/shapes etc in 3d space. You ''ask'' it to put textures on those polygons, and draw a fog effect, or add a light at x,y,z etc.
OpenGL takes the information you give it to draw a scene on your screen.
That''s a terrible description, but it should be enough for you to figure it out.
