Light manager and shadowmap swapping

Hi all,
I'm almost finished the graphics side of my engine, but I just need a sanity check I guess.

I build a list of lights based on distance from main camera. Then using the closet light to the camera I render a single shadow map into an FBO. Uno them map it using shaders blah blah.. Should I be rendering 2 shadow maps then somehow cross fade them or will this be way to slow for some hardware ?

I hope to hit platforms like Mac OSX, Linux and Windows, but this may change in the future. I cant run any test machines at the moment.

And is there a new shadow method I've not read about online ? My books are getting old.
