OpenGL Number of primitives

I am working on a openGL/glut project, on which I am supposed to obtain some informations on some technical aspects such as FPS, time taken to the execution of a function and other kinds of things like that... I`ll work that out and try to get it shaped like a tool for general use.. simple stuff tho..
I would like to know if there is a way for me to obtain the number of primitives being rendered at a specific time.
Anyone knows a command or technique which might be helpful? Thanks in advance.
