Currently using DirectX 10. Should I upgrade to 11?
I have been using DirectX 10 for the last 2 years and it still meets all of my needs but I am rewriting a large part of my game engine and this would be the optimal time to upgrade to DirectX 11 but do I need a DirectX 11 card to use it or will it work with my GT 8800? I'm sure if it does work with my DirectX 10 card I still won't be able to access the full functionality so is it still worth upgrading?
You don't need a DirectX 11 card to use DirectX 11. When creating your device, you specify a feature level, and you just pass in the DirectX 10 feature level. You will not be able to use DirectX 11 specific features in this case.
In terms of the core API's it's all pretty similar, so that stuff shouldn't be hard to switch over. But you should be aware that a lot of the D3DX helper classes (sprite, mesh, font) don't exist for D3D10, so you'd have to replace them if you're using. Effects also have to be built from source code, and their functionality has changed as well.
