collision help

hello everyone,
Im working on a top down twin stick shooter. Right now im doing collision detection of bullets and enemies by checking bounding boxes around the drawn images. However if the player is too close to an enemy the shots travel too far to register. Does any one know of a better way to check for bullet collision

If you move the bullet with some time interval, use multiple shorter intervals and check for collision at each advance.
