I’m currently working on a C++ Video Player (FFMpeg). Unless my synchronization method is way off, I’m running into a performance issues while rendering at 1080p with OpenGL on a gforce8800.

The way I do it is I by rendering an orthographic quad and use glTexSubImage2D to update the image data when a frame is ready.

After reading on Pixel Buffer Objects PBO, I’m wondering if PBOs are still the best way to optimize pixel data transfer to the GPU since the paper was published in August 2005.

Any other insights on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
