[BMFont] Question regarding the .fnt file format?

I don't understand what the xoffset, yoffset and xadvance values are for.

I have the width and height of the character. Why not just create a quad of that size, slam the texture coordinates onto it and be done with it? I can then use the kerning values to move the quads to fit with each other.

I must be missing something otherwise these values wouldn't be here...
